Shtetl Neukölln: Klezmer Festival from 7th to 11th december


Klezmer in Neukölln? Yes. And right here.

That’s because Jewish life has come back to Berlin and with it many young, international Klezmer musicians who have established themselves in the cultural scene. Many of them have also made Neukölln their home and focal point. In addition to the regular Neukölln Klezmer Sessions and the Klezmerball Tantshoys Neukölln, the “Shtetl Neukölln” festival is premiering in 2016. The festival doesn’t highlight an historical, formalistic understanding of traditional Yiddish dance music – instead it wishes to present the openness and integration potential this music has now.

 

That’s why, in addition to concerts, sessions and a Klezmer ball, the programme includes a wide range of workshops on the topics of Klezmer dance, Yiddish songs and instrumentals. What’s more, the multimedia project celebrating the 140th birthday of the Yiddish poet and songwriter Mordechaj Gebirtig will be presented during the festival.

WORKSHOPS and open session

There are three workshops running in parallel:
Workshop: Klezmer dance
Workshop: Yiddish song
Workshop: Instrumental

In the open sessions the workshop participants meet to exchange ideas and make music/sing/dance/have fun together.
The workshop team: Sasha Lurje, Sanne Möricke, Vanessa Vromans, Sayumi Yoshida, Christian Dawid, Emil Goldschmidt, Daniel Kahn, Hampus Melin and Ilya Shneyveys.

New Yiddish Song

Daniel Kahn is one of the most important innovators of Jewish music - radical and political, thrilling and tender, dark and full of hope. Singer, musician, actor, director, composer and entertaining storyteller in one - this is Daniel Kahn. Born and raised in Detroit, he had the chance to find his place among black and white, rich and poor, above and below, inside and outside. After his theatre and music studies he lived and worked in New Orleans, Detroit, New York and Ann Arbor and made a name for himself as a bar pianist, at bluegrass jams and punk circus parades, and as a director and actor. He also composed the music for a production of Brecht's "Man Equals Man".

The festival is organized by the Tănase & Gebirtig e.V. association and the Neukölln Klezmer Sessions in cooperation with the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN, and mostly takes place on the premises of the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN.
