Women on Stage!

WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN presents World Wide Women Music

We are in the best of company - from Angola to Cambodia, Nepal to the Ukraine, March 8th is International Women’s Day, and is now also celebrated in Berlin! As part of its concert series WorldWideMusic, the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN pays homage to “the stronger sex” with a women’s special. Berlin musicians from diverse origins and different genres DJ, play their instruments, raise their voices to celebrate themselves and all women. The curators and musicians Evi Filippou, Jarita Freydank, Mayelis Guyat and Sasha Lurje have chosen their female band for you. We redress the ‘balance’ - come to celebrate Women’s Day with us… and every Friday from March to June 2019 at 9pm in the club at the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN.

ZAZUKA feat. ASHIA BISON ROUGE

Zazuka is a Berlin-based Jordanian-born German composer and arranger who weaves songs out of intricate rhythmic cycles, mysterious harmonies and her distinct voice. She started her path in music as a keyboard and piano player in bands, theatres and sufi poetry groups in Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt. She
arranged for and played with intercultural classical music ensembles,
folk-fusion and reggae-gnawa groups, picking up songs and smithing her
own style along the way.

Since moving to Germany 10 years ago she completed her studies in Film
and Animation in Nuremberg and stepped into the film music world. Her
work in this medium fed her as a songwriter as it helped her to tell
stories from different perspectives. This is exactly what happens live, Zazuka embodies different characters
to tell their stories. Her own emotions and stories melt into those of
the different characters and their perspectives.

Her piano accompaniment
is at times simply a percussive element and at other times offering an
impressionistic underscore. In every concert she changes up the
arrangements and ensembles and leaves a space for improvisation, so that
every performance is unique.

She has released two chamber-pop and classical crossover singles (“Turn
Everything” and “Hudna” with string quartet) and her first album is set
for release in October 2019.

Ashia Bison Rouge carefully takes the listener into the deep dark woods of a sci-fi fairytale and out into the arms of a beloved friend with her captivating, expressive voice and cello playing. Along with her command of looping pedals and effects she creates distant journeys of electronic, pulsating, multi-layered orchestral pieces and then deconstructs them down into ambient, classical, and familiar nostalgic songs.

She recently won the TOA Berlin ‘Battle of the Sounds’ and in 2018 she had the honor of bringing her works to the Shanghai World Music Festival in performances and workshops, alongside a tour in China. Next to her solo project she has performed with/for the Fraunhofer Institut 70th Anniversary, Cirque du Soleil, Chamäleon Theater, Portland Cello Project, Arstidir, Birdmilk Collective, and Vagabond Opera. Ashia was born in Wroclaw, PL, grew up in Seattle, USA and lives today in Berlin.
