The ARAB SONG JAM concert series brings new interpretations of both popular and traditional Arab songs to the stage, at the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN.
The concert series bases its format on the Black American jam session culture of the 1940s. The first set of the evening was presented by a regular trio or quartet, while the second set had musicians new to the city introduced by the band leader.
Similar to the jazz jam sessions in all cities around the world being oriented towards The Real Book’s jazz standards, the new concert series ARAB SONG JAM goes Maghreb makes use of the rich treasures of the Arab song repertoire, that were made famous throughout the Arab world by legendary singers such as Oum Kalthoum from Cairo and Fairuz from Beirut, as well as traditional works.
Entry to the ARAB SONG JAM is free of charge but we will gladly accept donations!
Band leader this evening: Wassim Mukdad
Wassim Mukdad is a musician and composer from Syria. He writes music, is a conductor and plays the oud (the Arabic lute) in a variety of genres such as tarab, dance and mediaeval music, combining these with elements of other musical cultures.
Wassim has been playing the oud and piano ever since he was a child and was heavily influenced by Munir Bashir, one of the most famous oud players of all time. He studied at the Higher Institute of Music in Damascus under the direction of the renowned professors Askar Alikbarov (from Azerbaijan), Isam Rafee and Mohammad Othman (from Syria).
Wassim is currently working as part of many different musical projects such as the Babylon Orchestra, an orchestra that fuses Arabic and European music in Berlin. He is also part of the Kayan Project, a mixed quartet from Syrian and Israel that conveys a message of peace and diversity. Wassim has performed with many ensembles in Syria and Turkey. He always emphasises that a dialogue between cultures must be created in order to encourage freedom from stereotypes, racism and wars.

As a psychological and social counsellor, Wassim focuses his efforts on the field of music and contributes to projects such as Musicplus Fusion, the education programme of the Berlin Philharmonic. From 2010 to 2012, Wassim helped traumatised Palestinian, Iraqi and Syrian children affected by war through his collaboration in music and choir projects with the UNRWA, UNICEF, DRC (Danish Rescue Committee) and SARC "Syrian Arab Red Crescent SARC". In all these projects, Wassim continues to follow his vision, and sees music as one of the most important means of communication for connecting people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds that allows them to interact on a very deep emotional level.
