20 | 21 | 22 JANUARy 2017 | 2nd Global Drums Festival
From the 20th – 22nd January 2017 Berlin's WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN will be presenting exciting excerpts from the broad spectrum of the transcultural percussion scene in Berlin at the 2nd GLOBAL DRUMS FESTIVAL – focussing on percussive music from Arab countries. The festival will be accompanied by two percussion concerts from our World Wide Music series: on 13th January 2017 GORDON ODAMETEY & ABAATU BAND and on 27th January 2017 DUO SAFAR!
The GLOBAL DRUMS FESTIVAL represents the variety of percussive music in the different art and cultural settings of Berlin, and with it the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN cultural institute, founded in 1993 in Berlin, once more revisits its raison d‘être: the celebration of cultural difference and diversity – in one of the most rapidly transforming cultural cities in Europe.

Cândido Salomão Zango, also known as “Matchume”, has dedicated himself to Mozambican traditional music and dance since the age of six. His parents and grandparents are originally from Zavala, Inhambane Province (Mozambique), which is the center of Timbila, a marimba-style instrument which is revered as part of Mozambique’s national patrimony. Inspired by this long and passionate tradition of music and percussion, Matchume began to play, study music and produce traditional instruments such as timbila, mbira, xitende and djembe drums. |

brings together five dancers and drummers from different countries of origin who live in Berlin, and who have different kinds of dance training. They unite their love of dance with their equal fascination of Asian drumming. They have been working together in various projects for a number of years already and founded RASA DAIKO with the idea to place their diverse artistic skills in a contemporary context that connects cultures.

Tak Taka - Beats of Egypt
The rhythms of Egypt are very diverse: from Suez in the North, to Assuan and Luxor in the South, the rhythms of the Bedouin and the Falahi, as well as other traditional and modern styles. Egypt has always been a melting pot of various cultures that have exchanged ideas and found a new home there. Dum Tek presents the diversity of Egyptian rhythms, accompanied by folk singing and folk melodies.
Nasser Kilada - Vocals, Oud, Percussion
Muhammad Ra'fat - Drums, Percussion
Moussa Coulibaly - Kora, Balafon, Talking Drum

Why do people say that in central Europe there are no rituals and that the people are not receptive to repetitive energy, the inner groove of an event? TAMAM wants to mix things up so the performers don't even know themselves where what they are playing comes from. It doesn't matter where it comes from! What interests us is where we, together with the audience, move to: tamam - me ? ein - verstanden? συμφωνείς? en - tendido? don't you agree?

Line up:
Bodek Janke - Poland/Berlin
Evi Filippou - Greece/Berlin
Alfred Mehnert - Germany/Berlin
Katrina Martínez Marrupe - Cuba/Berlin
Hogir Göregen - Kurdistan/Berlin
