Women’s Rights, Gender Politics, and the Egyptian State

Sidewalk Stories portrays 17 women from Egypt and abroad who got together in two workshops to exchange their experiences in the public space of Egypt’s capital. One of them was Sarah Seliman, a Cairene visual artist who took pictures and videos of her fellow participants at their favorite public spaces. These pictures come along with hand written statements in which these women not only discuss gender dynamics in Egypt in general and street harassment in particular - a phenomena 99,3% of all women in Egypt suffer from according to the UN. These women further demonstrate their creativity in order to claim their right to the public by presenting one empowerment-item which they use or wear in order to feel safer and more self-confident in Cairo’s streets. The Sidewalk Stories exhibition & panel discussion in Berlin are the result of a cooperation of the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures & Societies (BGSMCS) and Mayadin al-Tahrir ميادين التحرير with the project حكاوي الرصيف - Sidewalk Stories. |

“More than a Side Story – Women’s Rights, Gender Politics, and the Egyptian
State”
Moderation: Arsala Bader (HU Berlin, Deutsche Welle)
The panel discussion revolves around the issues of women’s rights and feminist activism, sexual harassment and sexualized violence by the Egyptian state, and the way women claim their public space

Dina Wahba (Freie Universität Berlin, Egyptian academic and women’s rights activist)

Jannis Grimm (Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies, Doctoral Fellow working on state repression and sexualized violence in Egypt)

9:00 PM Screening Bent Bemeet Bent (40 min., Arabic with English subtitles) by Sarah Seliman
‘Bent Bemeet Bent‘ portrays nine women from Cairo who took part in the Sidewalk Stories project at their favorite places of the city. In the film they talk about gender roles, sexual harassment and how they confront it.
On June 23, the exhibition can be visited at the public film screening of
Mayadin al-Tahrir ميادين التحرير
from 6 to 10 PM.
This event is a collaboration between the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies and WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN.
