Songs of the Civil Rights Movement
Ebony Big Band
The Ebony Big Band will perform sacred and "social resistance" musical excerpts from Duke Ellington’s “Concert of Sacred Music”, Max Roach’s “Freedom Suite”, as well as featuring artist from the civil rights era such as Mahalia Jackson, Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln, Oscar Brown Jr. and John Coltrane. These artists represented a true reflection of African American's musical and political contributions toward the continued struggle for political and religious freedom in the United States during the time of the civil rights movement during the 1960s and 70s.

All of these great African American composers, musicians and visionaries showed, through their works of art, how to communicate this need for freedom and self-determination to the listeners of the world through their music. In addition to our special guest, singer Yamil Borges, who will also host the evening, and the fabulous Berlin sensation, singer/actress Queen Yahna, performing songs from church during this era, we will be using a slide presentation to help tell our story visually as well.
