While the world watched Tunisians ousting their president in January 2011, few have followed key events that preceded this historic episode. Cursed be the Phosphate takes its audience back to January 2008, when a group of unemployed youths organised a sit in in the phosphate-producing town Redeyef. The Abu Dhabi Film Festival’s Best Arab Documentary identifies the labor strike as a key precursor of Tunisia's revolution.

Im Anschluss an den Film moderiert Viola Shafiq die anschließende Diskussion.

Der Film wird gezeigt im Rahmen einer 3-teiligen Reihe in Kooperation mit Mayadin al-Tahrir e.V. und EUME (Europa im Nahen Osten – der Nahe Osten in Europa), einem Forschungsprogramm am Berliner Forum Transregionale Studien.
