Im Rahmen des British Council Literature Seminar 2018:
"Writing Gender: Sexuality, Feminism and Masculinity"

Professor Bernardine Evaristo, on the final evening of the British Council Literature Seminar 2018, will give a public reading of her work. This will be followed by a discussion with Mark Stein.

After the reading, electronic blues duo 'Brixton Boogie x Okwonga', or BBXO, will perform their first ever gig: think spoken-word and rap meets politics and pop.

Bernardine Evaristo

British writer Bernardine Evaristo is the award-winning author of seven books and numerous other published and produced works that span the genres of novels, poetry, verse fiction, short fiction, essays, literary criticism, and radio and theatre drama. She is also an editor of anthologies and special issues of magazines. Her writing and projects are based around her interest in the African diaspora. She is Professor of Creative Writing at Brunel University London.

Her awards include the Jerwood Fiction Uncovered Prize, EMMA Best Book Award, Publishing Triangle Ferro-Grumley Award for LGBT Fiction for Mr Loverman (USA), Big Red Read Award, Orange Youth Panel Award, NESTA Fellowship Award and the Arts Council of England Writers’ Award 2000. Her books have been a Notable Book of the Year thirteen times in British newspapers and The Emperor’s Babe was a (London) Times ‘Book of the Decade’.

She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2004, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2006 and a Fellow of the English Association in 2017. She received an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2009. She joined the governing Council of the Royal Society of Literature in 2016 and became a Vice Chair in 2017.

BBXO is: the first mouthful of weekend alcohol - the cap tucked under the hoodie, the full-fat milk and the cookie - BBXO is: self-honesty's sting - the distant friend who suddenly rings - the morning mist, the first hand across the family rift - BBXO is: the message unread, the common thread - the smack of caffeine - the proud stain, the playful dark - BBXO is: thought - the claws of a hawk - the cobble of the stone, the stumble home - the graveside tear, the fear clutched near - the midnight haze, the work then the wait - BBXO is: urgent - it’s London, Hamburg, Berlin - BBXO is: tunes - the bass roaming the walls of the room - the soles of your feet danced gratefully sore - the thirsty ears desperate for more - BBXO is: the severed cord, the sword gently withdrawn, the child's first yawn, autumn dawn - BBXO is: the welcoming laugh, the calming star, the walk to the lands beyond charts.
